Diver With Schooling Mado

These Mado are absolutely everywhere in Sydney Harbour and surroundings, so they’re good predictable schools to work with. This photo is a bit older from a dive at North Head in Sydney, but I remember chasing them in circles with my buddy (in the shot) until this opportunity arose with the sun behind the [...]
Under The Surface

Different take on the bait ball from previous post at Palm Island.
This is really just underneath the surface, which is why the fish appear to glow in the sun, which isn’t a photoshop trick. Strong contrast is always good for monochrome, so I converted this to black&white in Silver Efex Pro, then [...]
Bigeye Snapper

Schooling Bigeye Snapper I chased over the fallen mast midships at the SS Yongala. You gotta love the yellow tone contrasting with the blue backdrop. These guys are easier to photograph than silvery bodied fish because they don’t reflect as much flashlight, so less of a challenge when positioning your strobes.
I went in [...]
Baitfish Over Shallow Reef

Another shot from the bait ball from Palm Island, which is actually more of a carpet than ball shape. Here, I like how the texture of the undersurface of the water comes out and how in these ultra shallow photos (~1m) you barely need any flash to get good results.
Camera settings: Nikon D300, Tokina [...]
Schooling Baitfish

I was out of the water already after the dive at Palm Island, when Matt spotted this ball of baitfish from the boat. Lucky me started the dive with 270bar of air (can you say burst disk?) so I had some left and went back there to find them in the hundreds presumably hiding [...]
Feeding Frenzy

An unidentified ball of fish found in the shallows at Table Coral City, Wakatobi. I had previously posted about this dive and the hunting trumpetfish that are part of it (some of which can be seen in the background). To say there are plenty of fish here, is an understatement, their numbers were in the [...]
Gorgonian, Pyramid Butterflyfish

Another soft coral shot from Wakatobi. Here I got lucky with the schooling Butterflies which are adding to the photo by swimming around the Gorgonian. In real life they actually swam downwards and I was photographing this towards the surface in portrait mode, making this shot a good example that you don’t need to be [...]
Hunting Trumpetfish

If you ever watched a BBC documentary, such as Blue Planet, you might have seen scenes of a feeding frenzy or two. Fish circling around in huge balls, predators going in from all directions, bigger predators going after the smaller predators, it’s like a Hollywod action movie, just in the ocean.
In the 200 odd dives [...]
Table Coral City

A large school of unidentified fish cruising by at ‘Table Coral City’, Wakatobi. This proved to be a fantastic dive site with loads of hunting Jacks , Trumpetfish , schools of Damselfish , Pipefish and Crocodile Needlefish (some photos to follow). It is among the best of what Wakatobi has to offer (together with [...]
Schooling Pyramid Butterflyfish

A common find in Wakatobi and the most abundant species of the Butterflyfishes, the Pyramid Butterflyfish can be found in large schools at walls.
These were going on about their business at Fan 38 East on our afternoon dive. While they are exceptionally pretty in their colorful display and schooling behaviour they don’t like divers [...]
