Coral Overgrowth SS Yongala

More work from my favourite shipwreck to date. The SS Yongala superstructure lays at an angle on her starboard side. If you descend all the way, you reach the end of the decks where the railing must have been in about 27-30m and can fit just underneath the wreck in some places.
This was photographed just [...]
Six-banded Angelfish

A resident Six-banded Angelfish you can reliably find at the SS Yongala on the starboard side, midships in 15-20m. They usually come in pairs.
I find these notoriously difficult to light and compose, mainly because of their dark faces and if they weren’t so pretty I’m sure I would have given up much earlier.
Here [...]
Feather Star

Enough freshwater, here’s the first shot from the actual coral sea :) This was taken at Palm Island, about an hour by boat north-east of Townsville.
Very unusual to find the feather star attached like this in blue water, so great photo opportunity and I also got extremely lucky with the soft coral fans behind [...]
Dead Tree

We found this cylon mothership dead tree at the bottom of Crystal Creek in 5m of water. This was our try dive and there weren’t many fish around so I started experimenting and tried to frame it against the surface, using the distortion of the fisheye lens for dramatic effect.
Edited in Aperture and Color Efex [...]

My longest diving break in years is over and yes that feels great! I returned from a trip to Townsville last night, where we got to dive Crystal Creek, Magnetic Island, Palm Island and of course the SS Yongala. The trip was nothing short of spectacular and it was great to catch up with friends [...]
Alone In The Dark

When editing all my recent shots from the Barrier Reef in January, I had one left over that I liked and never got to finish. It was taken on a dive at the Cod Hole at Ribbon Reef #10. We were in about 10m of water at the beginning of the dive when this unidentified [...]
Blue-stripe Snapper

What a fantastic pattern! Animals like these remind me of what I imagined colorful tropical fish and coral reefs to be like as a kid. I’m fairly confident on the fish id on this one, counting 4 lateral blue lines and a dusky pattern on the belly, so according to Randall et al., it’s a Blue-stripe Snapper [...]
Two-lined Monocle Bream

Sometimes fish identification can be hard. I now own two different books on the subject and consult fishbase online, but it can still be difficult to even narrow. In this case, I can see one gill slit, big eyes and a yellow dorsal fin (cut off). I originally thought it’s a soldierfish but had to [...]
Scalefin Anthias

This species actually took me a while to identify and white still not 100% sure, I think it’s a female Scalefin Anthias , which according to the Australian Museum, range from orange to yellow and are different in physical appearance to the males. The dorsal fin has relatively coarse scaling though it’s not visible on [...]
Ananas Sea Cucumber

This is one of the most unusual photos I took during our new year’s trip to the Coral Sea and I’m glad it turned out sharp.
What you are looking at is the leathery skin of an Ananas Sea Cucumber . These are abundant in the Coral Sea and we’ve seen them on pretty much every [...]
