Pygmy Leatherjacket

One of my Sydney favourites, Pygmy Leatherjacket , very tiny, almost cute looking fish, which loves the mucky bays in the harbour. This is a stock photo from a while back that I rediscovered and decided to edit. The original was a bit washed out, suffering from low visibility on the day. I post processed [...]

Nudibranch

This is a Nudibranch found at Chowder Bay in Sydney, species Variable Aphelodoris . Of all the families in the ocean, these are probably the most diverse, colorful and yet difficult to identify. Imagine several thousand species of colorful little sea slugs, decorated in seriously every pattern and color you could imagine. To give you [...]

Hippocampus Whitei

Today for a different take on the Sydney or White’s seahorse . I have left in the backscatter on purpose, because it adds to the composition in this instance and turned the photo black and white. If you’re wondering about the species, no they’re not white, they are just named after John White, surgeon general [...]

Blue Groper

Another dive in Sydney, another nosy Blue Groper . I would go as far as recommending these for test shots, you can’t shake ‘em, they just keep coming back whatever you do.
Here we have an available light photo, the flash died on this dive at Maroubra, so had to make due with what i could [...]

Self Portrait

This slow moving exemplary of species Homo sapiens got blinded pretty badly by the twin YS-250 Pro flash heads when taking this photo but it ended up being all his own fault.
After looking directly into my own dome port and flash, I feel sorry for most of the fish that endure this during shoots [...]

Sponge Garden

Underwater landscape photography is something I have never heard of before, that’s probably because there is no such thing. Yes, there are your coral reef scenes, but they usually include fish.
Here I just snapped away at the sponge overgrowth on the seabed because of the unusual shapes and distribution of the sponges. I shot [...]

Black Reef Leatherjacket

Black Reef Leatherjacket

A Black Reef Leatherjacket hovering in midwater. I often see these in pairs, and a quick look into Australian Marine Life, Graham Edgar confirms they “cohabitat”. The white/yellow eye makes them easy to identify and they are moderately common in Sydney’s blue water dive sites. Photographically they are nice because of the color contrast [...]

Safety Stop

What do you do with the three minutes at 5m? Good question. Well you can practice your hover for example if you’re in blue water, or you can try aiming a wide-angle lens at Comb Jellyfish in passing.
Here I actually tried in 9 point manual focus mode. For the less photographically inclined, this [...]

Leave Me Alone

Today I’ve got a quick follow up to the Weedy Seadragon which I shot from the hip, but kinda liked.
He is actually trying to hide from the camera here after I took the first two photos, so I gave him some space and then returned a little later. I like how he disappears [...]

Weedy Seadragon

Got lucky on Sunday! Added another Weedy Seadragon willing to pose to the collection, good visibility, sun, and a boat with only 4 divers. Yes, sir!
Weedy Seadragons are kinda difficult to shoot because of their unusual form. Here I’m using the Tokina 10-17mm for close focus wide angle and for that You really want [...]
