Tiger Flathead

Just when I thought I had seen the bulk of local marine life, everything changes again. Last night was a very productive dive with great photo opportunities, despite the (at best) mediocre conditions. Also, if I finally learned something about underwater photography, then it is that visibility does not matter.
Tony, Caz and me dived [...]
Striped Anglerfish

I used to think of Muck dives as time fillers inbetween “real” boat dives – this has recently changed as we increasingly go night diving from shore. As with anything, you learn more when you take a second look, which is how we found the Striped Anglerfish sitting on the seafloor of Chowder Bay [...]
The Blenny’s New Home

Look who moved into a can of coke in Chowder Bay. This Brown Sabretooth Blenny found a new home in a piece of junk just off our jetty. It looks like it is not too impressed by visitors showing up at his new residence. This is of course a shot, I could impossibly pass [...]
White’s Seahorse

Since the Ornate Ghost Pipefish has been reported in Sydney waters about three weeks ago, we have been heavily night diving, looking for it. While I am unable to declare this mission a success yet, we found no less than seven White’s seahorses in Chowder Bay last night during our search, which is the [...]
Variegated Lizardfish

This is a photo I originally really liked but never published – it involved a bit of work with Aperture’s dodge and burn to help it over the line.
I found this Variegated Lizardfish at 20m depth in Wakatobi, sitting almost upright in the water. Unfortunately the surrounding rock formation made it difficult to approach [...]
Anemone Cleaner Shrimp

A while back in November, I posted a similar shot on one of these cleaner shrimp , but I just couldn’t help repeating myself with this follow-up version, where the subject stands out much better. The dive site and story are the same as in the old post, so I’m just going to stick with [...]
Bubble Coral Macro Structure

What do you do when you’ve got your 105mm macro lens on and there are no fish in sight? You shoot coral surface structures – never ending variations of color, texture and form. These are called bubble coral , but they almost look like inverse thumb prints or finger digits to me (or maggots).
This photo [...]
Bluestriped Fangblenny

Meet one of natures great imitations – the Bluestriped Fangblenny , which, when juvenile, looks very similar to, and exploits a niche in the ecosystem by mimicking the Bluestreak Cleaner Wrasse .
Cleaner wrasses are a symbiotic lifeform. They feed on larger fish, picking dead scales and parasites off their bodies. This will be recognized by the [...]
Painted Frogfish

Talk about a lucky find – the Painted Frogfish appears to be as rare as it is weird. According to our divemaster Ben at Wakatobi, they haven’t seen any for months, so I was thrilled to get this little guy in front of my lens.
Frogfish, or Anglerfish as they are called in Australia, are [...]
Porcelain Anemone Crab
Blogged by Simon on November 27, 2009 4:15pm | Last updated by Simon on February 21, 2010 12:24am | Category: Underwater Photography |
This little crab is yet another inhabitant of the sea anemone, together with the Clownfish and the Cleaner shrimp. They are called Porcelain Crabs because of their tendency to voluntarily part with a limb when in distress. This behaviour is apparently designed to distract predators while the crab flees (they subsequently grow back the [...]
