Striped Catfish

I love it when I find something new at my local dive site and I’ve never seen a catfish in the muck before. Irene and me fiddled with the identification for a little while before we agreed on the Striped Catfish . They are only 20cm long and blend in well into the surroundings, in [...]
Blue Swimmer Crab

A Blue Swimmer Crab walking across the seabed at night in Chowder Bay. While these are excellent swimmers as the name suggests, they are not pelagic and the females like to come to sandy bays to seek shelter and release their eggs.
I have a suspicion the many fishermen we see on our [...]
Unicorn Sole

This Unicorn sole (kindly identified by my friend & biologist extraordinaire Irene. I owe the scientific classification of all my photos to her) typically inhabits the waters of northern Australia, so I suspect it may be a visitor to Sydney that got washed down the East Australian Current along with the other tropical visitors [...]
Cuttlefish Portrait

Unfortunately I still haven’t gotten any new images or dives done for the past 3 weeks, so I’m working off stock photos. The good news is there are plenty of these I always wanted to publish. This Cuttlefish ist just small enough (about 20cm) to do a portrait photo with the 60mm macro lens.
Photo [...]
Hermit Crab

On the last PADI digital underwater photogaphy course I ran at my local dive shop, we practiced getting close and shooting upwards on what we first thought to be an empty seashell. It was nicely placed on top of a manmade object and nobody spent any time thinking about how it might have gotten up [...]
Groove Cheek Goby

I wasn’t diving this week, so I’m working on a few stock images I have shot during recent night dives in Sydney. With the usual suspects like Anglerfish out of the way, I am now trying to identify smaller fish like this, almost transparent, little Goby. Currently, my best guess is the Groove Cheek [...]
Bluestriped Goatfish
Blogged by Simon on March 11, 2010 11:23am | Last updated by Simon on March 11, 2010 11:23am | Category: Underwater Photography |
This is one of the most common and unafraid fish you will find in the greater Sydney area. The Bluestriped Goatfish loves sheltered bays and is perpetually scanning the bottom with it’s two barbels for sources of food. You can also find them just ‘resting’ on the ground, which makes them easy to photograph [...]
Stingray Portrait

When you think of Stingrays , macro photography is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. On this dive about 2 weeks ago, I was on the 60mm macro which is what I usually shoot at night because the majority of subjects is small, and let’s face it – I have never heard [...]
Pygmy Leatherjacket

At first I thought this is a juvenile animal because of the relatively small size and shortish features, but nothing could be further from the truth. While browsing one of my fish id books (Australian Marine Life by G. Edgar), I came across the Pygmy leatherjacket which looks like a near perfect match.
I [...]
Squid

Squid, or Southern calamary are a common visitor to the flat, sandy bottoms of Chowder Bay. You can easily observe them schooling during the day, but like with everything else it’s easier to get close to them at night. Their colorful display is fantastic to watch when you shine a torch at them, and [...]
