Pipefish

Another semi-regular find in Chowder Bay: Pipefish , usually buried in the muck and easier to spot at night than during the day. Camera settings: Nikon D300, 60mm macro, f/29 for 1/125s, ISO 200.
I didn’t like the color and lighting of the background, so I burnt it with a brush, then used the sponge [...]

Old Wife

Old Wife closeup also from recent night dive in Chowder Bay. For those of you who know the site well, this one was shot a little further out, 16m down at the two sunken yachts. I usually wouldn’t take my macro setup down there, but did on this dive which turned out to be [...]

Eastern Smooth Boxfish

Today something new from Sydney. Eastern Smooth Boxfish photographed at night in Chowder Bay and commonly found inside the harbour.
According to the Australian Museum, “the colouration of the Eastern Smooth Boxfish changes with growth. Tiny juveniles are completely yellow. As the fish ages it develops brown spots”, so this one is probably in his [...]

Snail

At first I thought this may be a shark egg, but Irene confirms it is indeed a snail . There is probably a good reason I’m not a marine biologist!
I photographed this a while back at Chowder Bay, and it has been collecting virtual dust on my hard drive since then. I desaturated this [...]

Squid

Squid

Squid , photographed from above (breaking rule #1 in underwater photography), while testing the camera for leaks just after jumping into the bay. Nevertheless I liked this shot, and once cropped so the subject fits into the frame diagonally it actually works surprisingly well. Note there isn’t even particularly good negative space here, but it [...]

Pygmy Leatherjacket

One of my Sydney favourites, Pygmy Leatherjacket , very tiny, almost cute looking fish, which loves the mucky bays in the harbour. This is a stock photo from a while back that I rediscovered and decided to edit. The original was a bit washed out, suffering from low visibility on the day. I post processed [...]

Nudibranch

Nudibranch

This is a Nudibranch found at Chowder Bay in Sydney, species Variable Aphelodoris . Of all the families in the ocean, these are probably the most diverse, colorful and yet difficult to identify. Imagine several thousand species of colorful little sea slugs, decorated in seriously every pattern and color you could imagine. To give you [...]

Hippocampus Whitei

Today for a different take on the Sydney or White’s seahorse . I have left in the backscatter on purpose, because it adds to the composition in this instance and turned the photo black and white. If you’re wondering about the species, no they’re not white, they are just named after John White, surgeon general [...]

Bioluminescence

Long time no post! For those of you who don’t know me, we just had a little baby boy so diving wasn’t high on my priority list in the past few weeks. What I am doing however is finally working on all that stock photography I shot over the past year and still haven’t published [...]

Gloomy Octopus

Gloomy Octopus

Gloomy Octopus is the most commonly found species of the Octopus family in and around Sydney. They love the muck and the opportunities for hiding in there. I have witnessed them buried in a hole, holding on to a loose leaf of seaweed with their suction disks to camouflage the entrance.
Photographically, they [...]
