Long Way Up

Black&White is a recent favourite of mine. More than often i will convert shots to see whether they have good light and end up liking monochrome better than the color version. I used the excellent Silver Efex Pro by Nik Software to modify this photo which is largely pale blue, and used a medium green [...]
Hunting Trevally

My SS Yongala photos from the last trip are slowly but surely coming to an end – time to go back and shoot some more I suppose :)
This was shot upwards from the stern, where the trevally roam. I have to admit i failed at getting good schooling photos though i tried a [...]
Grey Nurse Shark

Sunday turned out to be an excellent dive day at Magic Point. I was out there to shoot an assignment and finally got the Grey Nurse Sharks that I had been hunting for the last year on camera. There are only an estimated 200-300 of these animals left in Australia, and they are protected [...]

Today for a different take on the Sydney or White’s seahorse . I have left in the backscatter on purpose, because it adds to the composition in this instance and turned the photo black and white. If you’re wondering about the species, no they’re not white, they are just named after John White, surgeon general [...]
Stingray In The Dark

Today I’ve got another Stingray (Family: Dasyatidae) I’ve photographed a while back at Manly Rocks. Notoriously shy animals as they are, it was extremely difficult to get close to it (I don’t have the faintest idea how Steve Irvin managed to?). If you read this blog frequently, you may hear me saying ‘getting close’ here and there [...]
Staghorn Coral Against Surface

It’s been a month since we’re back from Wakatobi and I have finally sighted much of the raw material. It may sound like the bleeding obvious, but one thing I learned on this trip is that most of the good shots have been taken in 8m or shallower. Towards the end of the second week [...]
Giant Cuttlefish

A Giant Cuttlefish from last weekend’s dive at Sponge Gardens. Shot with 10.5mm fisheye at close distance, exposed at f/8 for 1/250s, then converted to black and white. I used a burn filter to darken parts of the image and lowered the contrast to soften some of the tones during black and white conversion.
This [...]
Entering The Water

Today, I wasn’t diving for a change, but staying out of the water aboard Hoochie Mumma. The boat picked us up at Chowder Bay, and took us out of the harbour, down towards Maroubra, whale watching. July/August is whale season in Sydney – these large marine mammals pass us by as they migrate from the [...]
Alone In The Dark

When editing all my recent shots from the Barrier Reef in January, I had one left over that I liked and never got to finish. It was taken on a dive at the Cod Hole at Ribbon Reef #10. We were in about 10m of water at the beginning of the dive when this unidentified [...]
Cuttlefish

On Sunday, we went to dive Chowder Bay in Sydney Harbour for seahorses (story on that coming up), and amongst other things, found two small cuttlefish hunting, or better stalking prey, which is what they reportedly do when holding up their top pair of tentacles. I decided to stalk them myself for a while and out [...]
