The Oceans by Ellen J. Prager, Sylvia EarleI found this book an extremely useful introduction to oceanography. It is written covering a broad spectrum, from the earth’s history on a geological timescale, to evolutionary biology, as well as the ocean’s chemistry and weather / climate.

While reading this you will find out what plate tektonics are or why the coriolis effect creates different rotational force in either of the two hemispheres. This is just two tiny examples. Every page is absolutely loaded with information, and the book is written so densely I often only read small bits of it at a time, to be able to absorb and digest.

This is a no nonsense educational book and probably intended for entry level marine biology students, however it is so informative it makes for highly addictive reading. Doesn’t cover any underwater photography in particular but has a few scientific images.
