If you are like me, a layman when it gets to fish identification, you might sometimes find yourself in a situation where the scientific classification found in many publications doesn’t help you further, leaving you bewildered as to how to identify a new critter. You know rough shape, color, size and a few features, but what to do?
Reef fish identification is an excellent book that solves exactly this problem. It’s twenty fish id groups for 2000 tropical, indo-pacific species are there to help you identifying fish by their main features, color and size, as opposed to boring you with latin names. All the authors of this book are also underwater photographers, which is made obvious by their choice of at least one, sometimes several good photos for each species. Some people prefer photos over illustrations when it comes to critter identification, some don’t. If you like photos, this is your book. Should you prefer illustrations, go for the previously reviewed Coral Reef Fishes, or Marine Fishes of Tropical Australia.
