Squid (Sepiotheutis australis), photographed from above (breaking rule #1 in underwater photography), while testing the camera for leaks just after jumping into the bay. Nevertheless I liked this shot, and once cropped so the subject fits into the frame diagonally it actually works surprisingly well. Note there isn’t even particularly good negative space here, but it doesn’t matter because the background works out nicely with the squid pattern.
I treated this in a similar way to the bubble coral, where a dual tone version of the photo is overlayed with a black&white version of itself, then merged with 50% opacity. I also used the definition slider in Aperture to enhance local contrast which gives it the grainy look.
Camera settings: Nikon D300, 60mm macro, f/22 for 1/125s in manual mode.
