At first I thought this may be a shark egg, but Irene confirms it is indeed a snail (Gastropoda). There is probably a good reason I’m not a marine biologist!
I photographed this a while back at Chowder Bay, and it has been collecting virtual dust on my hard drive since then. I desaturated this shot and bumped up definition to bring out the fine detail, then applied a vignette filter in Aperture. Color temperature has been adjusted for a warmer tone and this time I left in the backscatter – not that I’m getting tired of the clone stamp but sometimes water just looks more like water with it.
Camera settings: Nikon D300, 60mm macro, f/16 for 1/500s in manual mode, ISO 200.
