This slow moving exemplary of species Homo sapiens got blinded pretty badly by the twin YS-250 Pro flash heads when taking this photo but it ended up being all his own fault.
After looking directly into my own dome port and flash, I feel sorry for most of the fish that endure this during shoots and I mean this only half jokingly so.
If you’re reading this and are an underwater photographer, send me your ideas for self portraits. I’ve seen a couple but most are looking like this shot. Granted, there isn’t a lot of room to maneuver and you need to keep your hand on the trigger, but I’m curious what everyone else has got as for self portraits.
Photographed in manual mode f/8 for 1/800 with the Tokina 10-17mm while just below the surface on my way up. The surface reflections are what’s left of strong sun with the 1/800s shutter. Face is obviously underexposed, but this worked to the advantage of the photo in the end. I post processed this with a filter called Polaroid in Color Efex Pro, which draws the frame around the edges and nicely helps with the cut off hose to the left, adding extra depth to the image.
