This species actually took me a while to identify and white still not 100% sure, I think it’s a female Scalefin Anthias (Pseudanthias squamipinnis), which according to the Australian Museum, range from orange to yellow and are different in physical appearance to the males. The dorsal fin has relatively coarse scaling though it’s not visible on this photo incredibly well. Any fish id buffs out there got a better idea, let me know please.
Found during our recent Great Barrier Reef trip at Pixie Gardens, at the south end of Ribbon Reef#10, in 10-12m of water. Shot, using a 105mm macro lens at f16 for 1/125s, ISO800 and twin flash set to 25% manually. I edited the photo first in Aperture to adjust levels and definition of the scales. I then used Photoshop’s lens blur and Gaussian blur filters on the background for better negative space and to eliminate backscatter.
