Salad leaf shaped Pavona Coral (Pavona sp.) at “The Zoo”, definitely one of my favourite dives in Wakatobi. Dale was hovering in the background, adding nicely to the composition, I think he was getting ready for his own attempt at this shot.
I tried taking this photo with several different Aperture settings until I could just about prevent the sun from burning out the surface at f/11 with 1/60s. One of my flash heads flooded before this dive, so I had to shoot with one only, which was above the scene.
When editing, I used Color Efex Pro for Aperture to selectively burn areas around the Pavona Coral, then bump up the center brightness and saturation to compensate for at least some of the missing flash. At first, I thought one flash would be not enough but I actually ended up liking the selective light and brightness falloff towards the edges.
