Old Wives (Enoplosus Armatus)First photo from our dive outing at the weekend at Sydney’s Magic Point, with Eduardo, Dennis and Matty.

Unfortunately the Grey Nurse Sharks we went to see weren’t around this time, but we got plenty of smaller marine life, including a Weedy Sea Dragon and this pair of Old Wives (Enoplosus armatus).

Old Wives apparently derive their name from a grating sound they emit when in distress. Their distinct feature is having two dorsal fins which makes them easy to identify. Be especially careful not to handle them, as the spines protruding from the first dorsal fin are venomous.

Camera settings: Nikon D300, 10-24mm wide angle lens, f/8 for 1/60s, ISO 200. Twin flash from the top against backscatter, working a treat.
