Giant Cuttlefish

A Giant Cuttlefish (Sepia apama) from last weekend’s dive at Sponge Gardens. Shot with 10.5mm fisheye at close distance, exposed at f/8 for 1/250s, then converted to black and white. I used a burn filter to darken parts of the image and lowered the contrast to soften some of the tones during black and white conversion.
This is my second cuttlefish scene in the dark, and I love the other-wordly look of these creatures, they look like ghosts floating above the seabed. Their unusual body shape works great with light and shadow, as it keeps you guessing. Incidentally, a species whose scientific name begins with sepia, receives monochromatic treatment – fitting :) Flashed from the left, while maintaining the natural light from the surface.
