This photo was taken relatively deep compared to most of my other work, at about 25 meters. While this isn’t extremely ‘deep’ as per most recreational diving agencies, it does present you with different challenges when it comes to taking the shot. But first of all, the big plus: look at the rich deep blue water column as a backdrop to the sponge – you don’t get that in shallow water with f/8.
However, down there the environment does get dark quickly and your composition rules change. In such low light conditions, I found it better to flash only small parts of the foreground and use the blue/black backdrop as a contrasting element in your photo. This works quite well here and the color contrast makes the image pop.
Exposed at f/8 for 1/60s with ISO 200 with both flash guns just below and right of the image frame. Adjusted in Aperture for both levels and saturation.
