These Mado (Atypichthys strigatus) are absolutely everywhere in Sydney Harbour and surroundings, so they’re good predictable schools to work with. This photo is a bit older from a dive at North Head in Sydney, but I remember chasing them in circles with my buddy (in the shot) until this opportunity arose with the sun behind the subject, and a small enough distance to light up the school and the overgrown boulders with the flash.
Camera settings: Nikon D300, 10.5mm fisheye, f/8 for 1/80s, ISO 200. Post processed for levels and saturation and with the foliage filter in Color Efex Pro to bring out the yellow fishtails. I also adjusted curves in the highlights to get a pleasing tonal gradation for the sun rays.
