Coral Overgrowth SS YongalaMore work from my favourite shipwreck to date. The SS Yongala superstructure lays at an angle on her starboard side. If you descend all the way, you reach the end of the decks where the railing must have been in about 27-30m and can fit just underneath the wreck in some places.

This was photographed just above the starboard deck in 27m. The coral overgrowth here is spectacular with red and yellow sea fans covering the surface everywhere and huge schools of yellowtail snapper and sometimes red emperor hovering inbetween.

Just underneath the wreck, you can find sea snakes patrolling, and the ever present trevally are hunting. Looking up from down here gives you a dramatic view of the entire wreck site and you may observe large pelagics like spanish mackerel or wahoo coming out of the blue for a stopover at the local cleaner wrasse. It’s a fantastic dive that I never get bored of, no matter how often I do it.

Camera settings for this one: Nikon D300, Tokina 10-17mm, f/8 for 1/125s, ISO 200. Camera tilted at a slight angle to the wreck for dramatic effect. Post processing includes level and saturation adjustments, and backscatter removal with a clone stamp.
