This is one of the most unusual photos I took during our new year’s trip to the Coral Sea and I’m glad it turned out sharp.
What you are looking at is the leathery skin of an Ananas Sea Cucumber (Thelenota ananas). These are abundant in the Coral Sea and we’ve seen them on pretty much every dive, however hardly ever paid attention to any of them and it was not until I got really close up that I noticed the interesting surface detail. Sea Cucumbers are part of Chinese medicine and they are edible, though I have not been brave enough to try one yet, despite being remotely curious about the supposed ananas flavour ;)
Picture taken with a 105mm macro lens, very close up, f/16 @ 1/160s, ISO 800 in manual mode. I gave 25% flash which is the max I can do at this distance without burning out the highlights. I also added some saturation in post processing to improve the reds and changed the hue towards green slightly.
