Eastern Smooth Boxfish
Blogged by Simon on July 31, 2010 1:00am | Last updated by Simon on July 31, 2010 2:08am | Category: Underwater Photography |
Today something new from Sydney. Eastern Smooth Boxfish photographed at night in Chowder Bay and commonly found inside the harbour.
According to the Australian Museum, “the colouration of the Eastern Smooth Boxfish changes with growth. Tiny juveniles are completely yellow. As the fish ages it develops brown spots”, so this one is probably in his [...]
Hunting Trevally

My SS Yongala photos from the last trip are slowly but surely coming to an end – time to go back and shoot some more I suppose :)
This was shot upwards from the stern, where the trevally roam. I have to admit i failed at getting good schooling photos though i tried a [...]
Starfish

An older Sydney shot of a starfish , I rediscovered on my hard drive today. For some reason this fell through the cracks earlier on. The green and orange play nicely together and yes, they are real colors.
Nikon D300, Tokina 10-17mm, f/8 for 1/200s in manual mode. Ajusted for levels, saturation and crop.
Jellyfish Composition
Blogged by Simon on July 22, 2010 3:35pm | Last updated by Simon on July 22, 2010 3:36pm | Category: Underwater Photography |
This image is an overlay of two shots and as such not a “real” underwater photo, which is a first for me. I photographed the background on a dive at Magic Point, Sydney last Sunday and used a stock photo of an unidentified Jellyfish to overlay it with.
The background photo is pretty much left [...]
Six Spot Rockcod
Blogged by Simon on July 21, 2010 8:00am | Last updated by Simon on July 21, 2010 5:58pm | Category: Underwater Photography |
Okay this is further down almost at the SS Yongala’s bow. I found the Six Spot Rockcod together with the unidentified school in front and the trevally coming out of the blue – it’s a very busy dive site as I already mentioned numerous times and reminds me of a big herd all going [...]
Grey Nurse Shark
Blogged by Simon on July 19, 2010 2:00am | Last updated by Simon on July 21, 2010 10:26am | Category: Underwater Photography |
Sunday turned out to be an excellent dive day at Magic Point. I was out there to shoot an assignment and finally got the Grey Nurse Sharks that I had been hunting for the last year on camera. There are only an estimated 200-300 of these animals left in Australia, and they are protected [...]
Reef Bannerfish

More SS Yongala goodness! Irene identified this unusual fellow as a reef bannerfish . Photographically, you have to love the form for it’s lines and the angles it gives you.
Here I tried to compose diagonally and got lucky with the wreck in the background running almost perpendicular to the dorsal fin. A bright, prominently patterned, [...]
Schooling Baitfish

I was out of the water already after the dive at Palm Island, when Matt spotted this ball of baitfish from the boat. Lucky me started the dive with 270bar of air (can you say burst disk?) so I had some left and went back there to find them in the hundreds presumably hiding [...]
Coral Overgrowth SS Yongala
Blogged by Simon on July 09, 2010 8:00am | Last updated by Simon on August 14, 2010 7:20pm | Category: Underwater Photography |
More work from my favourite shipwreck to date. The SS Yongala superstructure lays at an angle on her starboard side. If you descend all the way, you reach the end of the decks where the railing must have been in about 27-30m and can fit just underneath the wreck in some places.
This was photographed just [...]
Snail

At first I thought this may be a shark egg, but Irene confirms it is indeed a snail . There is probably a good reason I’m not a marine biologist!
I photographed this a while back at Chowder Bay, and it has been collecting virtual dust on my hard drive since then. I desaturated this [...]
