Table Coral City

A large school of unidentified fish cruising by at ‘Table Coral City’, Wakatobi. This proved to be a fantastic dive site with loads of hunting Jacks , Trumpetfish , schools of Damselfish , Pipefish and Crocodile Needlefish (some photos to follow). It is among the best of what Wakatobi has to offer (together with [...]
Nudibranch “Chromodoris magnifica”
Blogged by Simon on November 24, 2009 3:39pm | Last updated by Simon on April 19, 2010 11:43am | Category: Underwater Photography |
A Nudibranch, which is very abundant throughout the tropics and you’re likely to encounter in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and eastern Australia. It’s only about 2-3cm long and an easy macro subject as they don’t tend to move very fast. These Nudibranchs live, and feed on sponges.
I was lucky to have the 105mm macro [...]
Anemone Cleaner Shrimp
Blogged by Simon on November 24, 2009 2:43pm | Last updated by Simon on April 19, 2010 11:40am | Category: Underwater Photography |
While closing in on a sea anemone for some Clownfish action, I found this bizarre looking little cleaner shrimp . They have largely transparent bodies with bright blue spots and extremities, which makes them an excellent photographic subject (and helps them attract fish). Apparently, cleaner shrimp often share sea anemones with Clownfish but are evicted [...]
Pavona Coral

Salad leaf shaped Pavona Coral at “The Zoo”, definitely one of my favourite dives in Wakatobi. Dale was hovering in the background, adding nicely to the composition, I think he was getting ready for his own attempt at this shot.
I tried taking this photo with several different Aperture settings until I could just about [...]
Bargibant’s Pygmy Seahorse
Blogged by Simon on November 24, 2009 10:35am | Last updated by Simon on April 19, 2010 11:38am | Category: Underwater Photography |
During our stay in Wakatobi, the local divemasters Ben and CJ proved extremely helpful in spotting creatures, pointing out a variety of small critters that are difficult to see with the naked eye because they blend in so well into the background. Soon I began noticing how on all dive sites where we found purple [...]
Schooling Pyramid Butterflyfish
Blogged by Simon on November 21, 2009 3:32pm | Last updated by Simon on August 14, 2010 5:51am | Category: Underwater Photography |
A common find in Wakatobi and the most abundant species of the Butterflyfishes, the Pyramid Butterflyfish can be found in large schools at walls.
These were going on about their business at Fan 38 East on our afternoon dive. While they are exceptionally pretty in their colorful display and schooling behaviour they don’t like divers [...]
Red Barrel Sponge
Blogged by Simon on November 21, 2009 2:49pm | Last updated by Simon on April 19, 2010 11:37am | Category: Underwater Photography |
These sponges are common in the tropical pacific area and were abundant in Wakatobi. Sponges are filter feeders, which means they absorb nutrients from water flowing through them, explaining their shapes and large surface area. Their surface material is elastic, spongy for lack of a suitable synonym – quite different than coral.
Sponges will often [...]
Coral Seascape

These are sea fans and other coral in various colors as found at Spiral Corner, Wakatobi. I am unsure about the exact species of sea fan, but really like the bright yellow. Most of the fans in Wakatobi were either bright red, less commonly yellow or purple, but I really need a reference book to [...]
Brain Coral
Blogged by Simon on November 18, 2009 7:06pm | Last updated by Simon on April 19, 2010 11:35am | Category: Underwater Photography |
A piece of round Brain Coral (looking at these it’s easy to see where they got their name from) paired up with Staghorn Coral I found during a safety stop at a wall dive at Fan 38 East, Wakatobi.
The sunball was tricky to expose and I probably shouldn’t have stayed in aperture priority [...]
Red Soft Coral With Diver

One thing I learned on my recent trip to Wakatobi is that the Nikon 10.5mm fisheye lens is an extremely versatile tool. You can use it to shoot wide seascapes or creative wide angles where you get very close to your subject and frame it pretty much any size you want. If you want a [...]
