Painted Frogfish

Talk about a lucky find – the Painted Frogfish appears to be as rare as it is weird. According to our divemaster Ben at Wakatobi, they haven’t seen any for months, so I was thrilled to get this little guy in front of my lens.
Frogfish, or Anglerfish as they are called in Australia, are [...]
Porcelain Anemone Crab

This little crab is yet another inhabitant of the sea anemone, together with the Clownfish and the Cleaner shrimp. They are called Porcelain Crabs because of their tendency to voluntarily part with a limb when in distress. This behaviour is apparently designed to distract predators while the crab flees (they subsequently grow back the [...]
Red Tube Sponge

It’s great when you have a model in the water you can work with. Dale and myself did quite a few shots together while in Wakatobi and it can be as easy as just hovering steadily while the other one’s camera is pointed at you, without the need for complicated hand signals.
Here the main [...]
Divers Above

This photo was taken relatively deep compared to most of my other work, at about 25 meters. While this isn’t extremely ‘deep’ as per most recreational diving agencies, it does present you with different challenges when it comes to taking the shot. But first of all, the big plus: look at the rich deep blue [...]
Coral Composition

This piece of coral was an extremely lucky find towards the end of a steep wall dive at Wakatobi. Not just are there several differently colored coral species here, they also nicely stand out against the background. So far I have identified two pieces of leather coral, the at the top, and I’m not [...]
Leather Coral
Blogged by Simon on November 26, 2009 4:40pm | Last updated by Simon on April 19, 2010 11:49am | Category: Underwater Photography |
Leather Coral in the shallows, 2m deep, on a grassy patch against the surface with sun rays breaking through. This is always a tricky shot as you have to stop down the aperture on your camera just enough so you get darker details in the water between the points where light breaks on the [...]
Hunting Trumpetfish

If you ever watched a BBC documentary, such as Blue Planet, you might have seen scenes of a feeding frenzy or two. Fish circling around in huge balls, predators going in from all directions, bigger predators going after the smaller predators, it’s like a Hollywod action movie, just in the ocean.
In the 200 odd dives [...]
Honeycomb Coral

On our dive at Kollo Soha Beach, Wakatobi, I came across a huge, ball shaped area in 15m depth, covered in identical small coral polyps, with a surface of several square meters wide. While this large coral “blob” looked cool enough from afar, I was definitely on the wrong lens, and since I had set [...]
Tasseled Scorpionfish
Blogged by Simon on November 25, 2009 4:41pm | Last updated by Simon on March 22, 2010 11:30pm | Category: Underwater Photography |
This Tasseled Scorpionfish was sitting inbetween ‘leafs’ of Pavona Coral , seemingly unimpressed by divers passing by. Given that Scorpionfish are amongst the most toxic species of fish in the ocean, they have good reason not to worry – nobody likes to get close to them because of the venomous dorsal spines. Lucky for [...]
Denise’s Pygmy Seahorse
Blogged by Simon on November 25, 2009 11:33am | Last updated by Simon on April 19, 2010 11:46am | Category: Underwater Photography |
Here is another species of seahorse , our divemaster Ben found at Blade, Wakatobi. Denise’s Pygmy seahorses are slightly smaller (around 2cm length) than the Bargibant’s seahorse and is one of the smallest known fish on the reef. They also live on Gorgonian sea fans, both which are pale pink and 2-3m wide, [...]
