Simon Mittag
Simon is an avid underwater photographer and marine life enthusiast from Sydney, Australia. Born and bred in Germany, he picked up scuba diving and underwater photography after moving down under in 2002 and has never looked back.
You can usually find him in the water on the weekends on one of Sydney’s dive boats, shooting his housed Nikon D300 “WALL-E”, in Chowder Bay at Plunge Diving, or if he’s lucky over a long weekend at Salt Scuba Diving on the Barrier Reef.
Simon is a qualified PADI Digital Underwater Photography Specialty Instructor who enjoys working with students on any type of underwater photography and including post processing images using Adobe Photoshop and Apple’s Aperture 3.
Clocking 250 dives on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, in Thailand, Sulawesi, Indonesia and French Polynesia his favourite dive sites are the wreck of the SS Yongala near Townsville, Steve’s Bommie on Ribbon Reef #10, Tupitipiti Pass on the southern end of Bora Bora, and Roma in Wakatobi.
Irene Fuertes-Jerez
Irene is our resident biologist, who maintains the site’s species index and above all else helps keeping Simon honest. Lucky for him, she is one of those rare dive buddies that will put up with photographers, happily hovering motionless in the water for eons while patiently waiting for stuff to happen around her.
Originally from Spain, Irene moved to Australia in 2008 to study marine biology at James Cook University in Townsville, where she currently completes her masters degree. Her research specialty are longfinned rockcod in the Keppel Island marine reserves and their connections with fishing areas.
Irene is also a PADI Master Instructor, with an extensive track record of training new dive instructors. Her certifications stand at well over 100 and she is counting over 2000 dives in Australia, Spain, Malaysia and Red Sea. Her favourite dive sites are La Palma on the Canary Islands, Brother Island in the Red Sea and wreck of the SS Yongala off Townsville.

Ned DeLoach
on May 28th, 2010Good morning Simon, and congratulations on that new baby boy. My partner Paul Humann and I are at the very end of a five-year Pacific invertebrate book project and need a photo of a male blue crab, Portunus pelagicus. Saw your shot on line and was wondering if we could include it in the book. Need image 300dpi about 10X15 cm. ASAP. Will be happy to send you a copy of the new book when off the press this Oct.
Thanks,
Ned DeLoach
